I saw the parents feeding swallows to their young several times in the months I watched them, though they more often brought pigeons to the nest ledge. It was fascinating, more than a century later, to see numerous Northern Rough-winged Swallows in the gorge and witness the same kind of pursuits they described. (Peregrine Falcons were called “Duck Hawks” in North America at that time.) Allen and Knight provided detailed descriptions of the falcons hunting Northern Rough-winged Swallows. Knight- appeared in 1913, in the National Audubon Society’s Bird-Lore, precursor of Audubon magazine. The first in-depth article about this nest-“The Duck Hawks of Taughannock Gorge” by Allen and H. Fuertes was a remarkable artist-regarded by many as the successor to John James Audubon. It now hangs in the Fuertes Room at the Cornell Lab. The year after finding the falcon eyrie, Fuertes made an oil painting of an adult Peregrine perched on a cliff at Taughannock with a fresh-caught Bufflehead. from Cornell in 1911 and go on to become a professor of ornithology there, the first in the United States, and teach many of the greatest ornithologists of the 20th century. But Allen was still a grad student in 1909. A frequent birding spot for them, they dubbed it “Sapsucker Woods.” Decades later, the area would become the home of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, which Allen founded. One of my favorite old Ithaca birding photographs is of Fuertes and Eaton standing together as Allen climbs to a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker nest-the first one found in central New York State. They no doubt told Arthur Allen about their discovery the same day. S far as anyone knows, the first birders to see the Taughannock Peregrines were famed bird-artist Louis Agassiz Fuertes and ornithologist Elon Howard Eaton, who heard the loud calls of the birds echoing up the gorge and tracked down their eyrie in 1909. It was an exhilarating experience-sweetened only by me later finding out that I got the job. Scott Sutcliffe, then executive director of the Lab, happily obliged, and I spent a wonderful afternoon there, imagining what it must have been like to see Peregrines nesting in the gorge. When I came to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology in 1990 to be interviewed for the position of editor-in-chief of Living Bird magazine, I asked if someone could take me to Taughannock Gorge, about 14 miles away. And they always ask about Taughannock Gorge: Do you ever see Peregrines there? Will they ever nest there again? Can I visit Taughannock with you? Countless people I’ve met over the years have told me they feel the same about Allen’s image. Bent’s Life Histories of North American Birds of Prey when I was 12 years old, and I’ve loved it ever since. I first saw the picture in a battered old copy of A. What a colossal image what a perfect depiction of the world of the Peregrine Falcon. Allen in the 1930s.Īrtistically, the composition of the image could not be more perfect: Three young Peregrines rest on their nest ledge in the lower-left corner as their mother perches on a branch diagonally from them in the upper-right corner, standing guard as the gorge's mighty Taughannock Falls-one of America’s most picturesque waterfalls, plunging 215 feet-thunders down in the background. For almost 80 years, the gorge has been a beloved destination for generations of Peregrine Falcon aficionados-almost like a religious pilgrimage site-all thanks to a single black-and-white photograph taken by ornithologist Arthur A. But they somehow still hadn’t returned to Taughannock (pronounced tuh-GAN-uck). They now once again nest throughout the lower U.S., Canada, and Alaska. Since their near brush with extinction in the late 1960s, Peregrine Falcons have bounced back strongly across their range-largely due to the banning of DDT and a massive recovery effort. Why, you ask? Because Peregrines haven’t nested in Taughannock Gorge since 1946, and this place is important. Such an experience is extraordinary by any measure, but having it happen here was what made it so special. Throughout the summer they would progress from dorky adolescents into sleek juveniles, rivaling their parents in beauty and aerial abilities. Then, in June, I observed the young falcons make their first clumsy attempts at flight. From across the gorge, peering through my scope, I saw them incubating their eggs in April and feeding their three downy chicks in May. I live near the gorge and spent countless hours watching these graceful flyers as they hunted, making spectacular stoops at pigeons, swallows, and other prey, or sometimes just relaxed, preening while perched on ledges or fallen trees hanging over the cliff side. Early this spring and through most of the summer, I had one of the most remarkable wildlife experiences of my life: I watched a pair of Peregrine Falcons successfully rear a brood of young at Taughannock Gorge, outside Ithaca, New York. On the sleeper I'd say it is almost always worth going for at least a classic room if at all possible - the seats are ok but honestly worth avoiding unless you really need, you'll be tiered the next day. Personally I'd probably pay about £15 extra for first class considering that is such a long journey - maybe £20 if I knew I was going to take good advantage of the complimentary food/drink and/or had a long connection/wait at either end and particularly wanted lounge access. For example for LNER you can check what is available on each train at - they range from a lot a full restaurant meal to a sandwich. I defiantly prefer the seats and on busy trains it is often a quieter environment, there are also first class lounges at the stations which are a nicer place to wait.Ī lot of the benefit of first class on Avanti and LNER is the free food and drinks and the offering varies a lot depending on the specific service. It defiantly can be - sometimes it isn't much more or occasionally cheaper! Other times it can be an order of magnitude different. Be aware that when trains first appear on websites it's common for a couple of weeks that only more expensive flexible tickets are available - then the advances come in late.Ĥ) Is 1st class worth it or just book regular class?įor if first class is worth it I'd say it depends a lot. Some trains also make intermediate stops at Watford & Stevenage.Īll 4 use Waverley station at Edinburgh, Avanti also stop at Haymarket as do some LNER trains.ģ) How many weeks in advance can I book train tickets to get cheap ticket? Kings cross is probably the best option though some go from Euston. I'd always book direct, if got want to easily compare multiple operators use which still redirect to the operator for purchase.Ģ) which train station in London is the starting point? If you are traveling in January there is a special offer on the sleeper at the moment: Like Avanti the sleeper uses Euston station in London. The most premium option is double which is a double bed but the prices for that are normally astronomical. There are standard seats (honestly not recommended - you wont sleep well - though they are wider and recline, more like first class seats) and a mixture of proper beds - classic and club are the same but the later has an en-suite toilet and shower and both have a bunk bed arrangement. The overnight sleeper train - very luxurious and a good time savour but often very expensive! Still worth looking at though depending on what you need. They are also very short of staff at the moment and have a lot of problems with reliability, if your traveling shortly I'd avoid them for this reason alone. Really though with the extra journey time they are not primarily designed for end to end journeys.Īvanti West Coast also have a middle option - "Standard Premium" - this gives you a first class seat but none of the free food/drink benefits. If you get bad motion sickness they might also be worth avoiding. They also use tilting trains which mean they are smaller then the others and tend to have less luggage space. Trains run every 2 hours and take about 6 hours. The other traditional operator - unlike the other 2 they run from London Euston rather then Kings Cross which might or might not be better. Currently 5 trains a day and along the same route as LNER. The newest operator and the low cost option - still perfectly fine though. Journey times vary and take about 4h20m-5h. The "traditional" and main operator - trains run every 30 minutes. 1) Which train company should I look to book train tickets? Of the 11 occupants on board, there were zero fatalities. The plane crashed into eight lanes of traffic and subsequently injured two persons on the ground. On May 26, 1987, a Continental Express flight, operated by Air New Orleans as flight 2962 (registration N331CY), crash landed just after takeoff from New Orleans International Airport.Despite the flap position being an important setting for takeoff, it did not appear on the Pan American pre-takeoff checklist. Flaps were not in the proper takeoff position, partly as the result of distractions while following their taxi checklist. On December 26, 1968, Pan Am Flight 799 (registration N799PA), a cargo flight in a Boeing 707-321C, crashed in Alaska immediately after departing, killing all three on board.Crashes attributed to checklist failures Life magazine published the resulting lengthy and detailed B-17 checklist in its 24 August 1942 issue. Investigation found that the pilots had forgotten to disengage the crucial gust locks (devices which stop control surfaces moving in the wind while parked) prior to take-off. History Īccording to researcher and writer Atul Gawande, the concept of a pre-flight checklist was first introduced by management and engineers at the Boeing Company following the 1935 crash of the prototype Boeing B-17 (then known as the Model 299) at Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio, killing both pilots. Failure to correctly conduct a preflight check using a checklist is a major contributing factor to aircraft accidents. Its purpose is to improve flight safety by ensuring that no important tasks are forgotten. In aviation, a preflight checklist is a list of tasks that should be performed by pilots and aircrew prior to takeoff. Armin suggests using SUS Inspector to find the link, but Ryan ( nom de plume Mr. For those of you who use a management platform that requires packages for deployment (e.g., Jamf Pro), grabbing the full ~13 Gb installer already in pkg form is a great option since it is hard to make a package that big yourself. Armin Briegel’s fetch-installer-pkg Python script (which leverages code from Greg’s tool)Īrmin references InstallAssistant in that post.Greg Neagle’s installinstallmacos Python script. The ones that apply to Big Sur and shared Macs are: Armin Briegel describes many of these options in detail in a blog post from November 2020. Which one you use will probably depend on your desired workflow. There are many ways to fetch a full macOS installer these days. So the first step was to reliably download the latest installer for Big Sur. The first piece of wisdom I picked up was that deploying the full installer could be done without requiring a logged in user and would correctly update the system, albeit with a bandwidth penalty (13 GB per station as opposed to 3–4 GB). My scale is such that I could login in to every single computer using an admin account and do this manually, but clearly that doesn’t work for larger deployments, nor does it make it possible to quickly deploy macOS updates that have a security payload. The first roadblock I encountered was that softwareupdate didn’t work with no user logged in, which had been the desired state for running Software Update in the past for my labs. If you are deploying single user computers, there may be some resources here that are useful, but your best strategy is likely to have the user update their Mac using Software Update in the GUI as God Apple intended, supplementing with tooling that reminds the user to do so (such as Nudge) as necessary. Note that this article will focus on how to deploy Big Sur updates on shared use computers, such as computer labs or libraries. This article is meant to gather some of this disparate information in one place to make things easier for your Big Sur (and likely Monterey) deployments. The information I needed to finish my deployments was in bits and pieces all over the place, and I had to learn some things through experimentation. Well, it seems that things are a little more complicated than that. When I read that the biggest problems were fixed in macOS 11.3, I thought I was in the clear since I didn’t start deploying Big Sur in earnest until 11.4. So when I started reading things that suggested that softwareupdate wasn’t working for triggering updates, I wasn’t seeing it because I was still running Catalina. Because Apple’s major OS release schedule does not align with the academic calendar at my University (and most others), I hold off deploying the newest major version of macOS until at least January but more commonly May. |
